Why Suffolk Sheep?
Adaptability
Suffolk Sheep are adaptable to all environments including both wet and dry conditions. The breed thrives in soggy wet conditions due to its hard-black feet and immunity to foot diseases. The breed also does well in hot dry conditions where the ram’s natural high fertility work well even in hot summer conditions. These traits are well and truly put to the test on our farm in Kyneton with our long wet soggy winters and hot dry summers.
Resistance to Parasites & Flystrike
The breeds clean face, crutch and points minimises fly strike and their hardy structure gives high resistance to internal parasites. This means less maintenance, husbandry supervision and health issues with the flock.
Productivity
Suffolk Rams have a great libido and greater activity, therefore ram to ewe numbers can be reduced and more lambs can be dropped in a smaller period.
Ease of Lambing
Lambs are born with narrow heads and smooth shoulders and are very strong at birth minimising lambing problems, loss of life and husbandry supervision. The ewes can lamb unattended making the birthing experience for both sheep and sheep owner a much more enjoyable one.
Size & Early Maturity
The Suffolk breed is known for its large carcass size and early maturity. Under favourable conditions Suffolk lambs mature for market as early as 9 to 12 weeks, or can be carried on to heavy weights.
Quality Carcass & Flavor
Suffolk Sheep meat has a tender sweet flavour and is the choice meat of top restaurants worldwide. The Suffolk lamb carcass is full of high quality lean meat and the breed is the optimal breed for crossing with Merinos and first cross ewes for the prime lamb market.
